Making Shoes Fun For Holidays

A fun part about the holiday season is dressing up your kids in beautiful attire so that you can get their pictures made or so that you can get a nice family picture made. While it's usually easy to find dresses, suits, pants, and sweaters for the holiday season, it can be a challenge to find kids holiday shoes. If you're like many parents, then you want to get something that's a bit dressier than tennis shoes, such as a pair of black shoes with a buckle on them. There are also a few fun ideas to consider if you want to add a little life to your pictures or if your child has a special event to attend over the holidays.
Making Shoes Fun For Holidays

White shoes are an option to consider that will match any outfit that your kids wear. Keep in mind that white does stand out more than black, so you want to keep the colors a bit on the lighter side with dresses and other outfits as well so that everything blends together. If you're looking for something elegant, then black shoes would be the best option. Boots are an idea to consider, especially if you're getting pictures made outside or if your children like to run around and play. Sometimes, the best pictures are those that you take when your kids are playing and being themselves.

A fun family picture idea would be for all the girls to wear leggings that are the same color and shirts that are the same color with boots while the boys wear jeans and shirts that are the same color as well along with boots. Add a little holiday flair to shoes for kids by putting jingle bells on them or a bow on the top of each shoe. You could also make the shoes colorful by putting wrapping paper on them, and idea to keep in mind if your kids are in a fun play at school.

What Aging Does To Your Smile And How To Fix it

We all know getting old can rob us of many things – our agility, our hair, and even our memories.

But aging also can cause physical changes to a person’s smile, which in turn can impact their sense of well being and influence their interactions with others.

“Many adults come to me complaining they have lost their smile,” says Dr. Stuart Frost, an orthodontist and author of The Artist Orthodontist: Creating An Artistic Smile is More Than Just Straightening Teeth (www.drstuartfrost.com).

“Older patients may have multiple issues that affect their smile, including mutilated or worn teeth, a misaligned bite, crowding, or problems with inflammation or recession of their gums. They may even have experienced the collapse of the underlying structures of the face due to missing teeth.“
What Aging Does To Your Smile And How To Fix it

Frost says some of the specific situations older people face with their smiles include:

Wear and tear. Some adult teeth have unattractive chips and pits that take away from a smile. These issues can be addressed with hard-tissue contouring techniques that restore the anatomy of individual teeth. Hard-tissue contouring can also eliminate the need for expensive cosmetic veneers or bonding.

Gum recession. The phrase “looking long in the tooth” comes from the fact gums recede, causing the teeth to look longer and unsightly. There are a few reasons gum recession might happen, Frost says. For example, using a toothbrush with coarse bristles can cause gum problems. Also, food can get trapped between the gum tissue and develop into tartar. Over time, tartar turns into calculus, which Frost says “acts like acid on steroids” to cause inflammation of the gums. That can eventually irritate the bone and cause it to shrink away, a condition known as gingivitis. The good news is that gum tissue can be recontoured as part of the last steps in a treatment plan. Recontouring the teeth can eliminate the little dark triangle that appears in between the teeth and the gum when the gum recedes which can be fixed with recontouring the teeth.

Misalignments. Teeth that are crowded, flared or misaligned not only affect the look of your smile, they also can have an impact on your ability to chew and can even cause some people to clench and grind their teeth, Frost says. “By aligning the teeth with braces and ensuring each tooth is in the correct position, we can bring back the functionality and youthfulness of the bite,” he says.

Narrow arch. Narrowing of the arches is typically due to extractions earlier in life. Frost says there are ways to return a more youthful appearance by widening the arch shape to broaden the smile and creates better upper lip support. As a bonus, he says, a broader arch and smile promotes better contouring of the cheekbones, which can take years off someone’s appearance.
“The last 50 years have seen a revolution in dental techniques for improving your smile that many people have yet to discover,” Frost says. “Investigating and taking advantage of some of those options can change someone’s life, regardless of age.”

Five Self-Help Tools to Use if You Are Depressed

I personally know the struggle and challenge of depression. Deep depression was the catalyst that brought me to apply, study, and then practice Energy Healing when I was a young mother of 28. I had 4 small children at the time and I was in a deep, dark place. Not a good place to be when you have 4 bright-eyed, beautiful kids needing you each day.

I started looking for more natural methods of healing. I am grateful that I have successfully healed my depression. Here are 5 of the top self-help tools that helped me and I hope they help you if this is your challenge, or that you will share them with someone that you know that is challenged with depression.
Five Self-Help Tools to Use if You Are Depressed

1. Stop your negative thoughts. If you have a problem stopping obsessive thinking, get an eye patch and patch your right eye. Patching your right eye will shut down the left hemisphere of your brain and the negative, obsessive thinking. It is better than a glass of wine!

2. Zip-up your central meridian. Your central meridian is the energy pathway that runs from your pubic bone to your bottom lip. It can act like a radio receiver if it is not zipped up, picking up negative energies and vibes of others around you. Zip it up by imagining zipping up a zipper that runs up this pathway.

3. Go for a vigorous walk everyday. Walking will increase your endorphins, which lifts your mood. Walking also activates your energy flows to cross from left to right, right to left. A healthy crossover flow of energy lifts your mood 40-60%

4. Refer to your depression as an experience that you are having that can be healed, rather than an identity you are stuck in. Stop saying, “I am depressed or I am suffering from depression.” Your “I am’s” define your identity and keep you stuck with more of what you don’t want. A healthier way of referring to your experience of depression is to say: “I am experiencing the condition of depression, and it is healing.”

5. Believe you can get well. Your belief creates your reality. If you doubt and fear you may never get well — you may not. If you believe you can and will you call it forth in your life. Consider the possibility that one of the higher purposes of your depression was to allow you the experience of healing it to graduate you into more of your true magnificence.

Anytime we overcome life experiences that felt like they had the power to even destroy us, we claim mighty powers of our true selves and have great abilities to touch the lives of others as a result. Believe in yourself, believe in your healing, and believe you have a great contribution to make as a result.

Who Are Food Gift Baskets Good For?

Generally speaking, food-themed gift baskets are an appropriate gift for just about any occasion and for any person on your gift-giving list. As a holiday gift, popcorn, smoked sausage, hot chocolate and coffee gift baskets are great to give as gifts to teachers or coworkers, and they also make great presents for a mystery gift exchange. Many people look forward to getting popcorn gift baskets or tins each year from beloved family members; these types of gifts quickly become nostalgic when given year after year.

Food gift baskets are a great congratulatory or celebratory gift for graduates and new parents. Many corporations give food-themed baskets to new and existing clients as appreciation gifts. Candy and fruit bouquets will brighten the spirits of a child who is feeling under the weather; they are also thoughtful gifts to give as alternatives to flower bouquets for a significant other's birthday or wedding anniversary.

The only drawback to purchasing a ready-made food gift basket is that many of them contain foods and ingredients that may pose health risks to anyone with food allergies or sensitivities. However, it is relatively easy to put together an allergy-friendly gift basket full of items that your friend, coworker or family member can safely consume and enjoy. If you are crafty, you can also put together themed gift baskets. A movie night gift basket could contain a bag of popcorn, some boxed candies, a favorite DVD, a bottle of soda and tickets to see a movie on the big screen. A cozy winter-themed basket may contain some hot chocolate with marshmallows, a fuzzy pair of socks or mittens, a small throw or pair of thermal pajamas and a couple of packets of hot soup mix.

Food is generally well received for any holiday or special occasion. Food is a source of comfort for many people, so it is often viewed as a sentimental and heartfelt gift. The way to the hearts of all of your friends and family this season is through their stomachs with food-themed gift baskets.

Avoid Meltdowns: 7 Steps to Ensure Social Success

When it comes to working with children, any parent, teacher, or therapist, will tell you that preparation is the key to success. This is especially true for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). New situations or social scenarios can provide quite a challenge. Unfamiliar sensory input, anxiety, and communication deficits can often lead to meltdowns. But what if we could avoid the undesirable behaviors for all kids with some simple preparation beforehand?

For many years, social stories have been used to help children prepare for new and challenging situations. These tools are stories written by parents or professionals to explain a social scenario or communication skill. Speech-language pathologists and hosts of Speechie Side Up podcast, Kimberly Tice, M.S. CCC-SLP and Venita Litvack, M.A. CCC-SLP created their Lou Knows What to Do social series because they found themselves constantly writing personalized social stories for their students. Why? Because they worked!
Avoid Meltdowns: 7 Steps to Ensure Social Success

Avoid Meltdowns: 7 Steps to Ensure Social Success

1. Set the scene: Describe the setting in as much detail as possible. Providing sensory information can help! For example, warn your child that the Thanksgiving family party may be noisy and have strong smelling food.

2. Utilize visuals: Utilize visuals whenever possible: This may not always be doable. But in the age of smartphones and iPads, a quick google image search can sometimes clear up confusion!

3. Construct positive statements: No one enjoys long lectures filled with rules! For example, “no running,” “no hitting,” “don’t yell.” Kiddos may be more receptive to positive statements that tell them what they should do instead (i.e. remember to walk).

4. Check for comprehension: Be sure to ask questions before, during, and after your conversation to assess your child’s understanding of the topic.

5. Explain social customs: People with ASD often do not see the value in certain social customs such as saying “Happy Birthday!” Explaining these rituals can clear up any confusion.

6. Suggest specific behaviors: Don’t assume your child knows what to do! Especially in a place where they have never been. Be clear about what you expect from them.

7. Summarize the most important points: Repeating the pertinent information can help your child retain it!

5 Tips When Looking For a New Job Over the Age of 40

When I look in the mirror, for the first 5 seconds I still see a twenty- year -old. Then the visible wrinkles around my eyes and jowls provide a friendly reminder that I’m not twenty anymore. At that moment in the mirror, I challenge myself physically as I don’t feel like I’m over forty, and the face I’m looking at cannot be accurate, but according to my birth certificate, it is. I mean, hell, I still feel young, so how can I look so different? Simply put, I’m just a twenty-year-old that now has twenty-five years of work experience, a family, and has journeyed through the ups and downs of life. Even though this is what I believe, I now know others don’t feel the same, especially when it comes to the work place. Here is my recent reality check. Last year I left my corporate job of 14 years. I was in a space where I had the opportunity to find a new job with a new company. I felt fresh, excited and limitless. Although it had been a while since I last interviewed, I thought, “No problem. I’ve got this. I used to any get any job I wanted, so finding a new one should pretty be easy.” After a few interviews, good interviews I thought, I wasn’t getting hired. Frustration set in because I could not figure out what was so different this time around. After all, my resume was stronger and more accomplished than my younger years.
5 Tips When Looking For a New Job Over the Age of 40

But something had changed. I aged.

Call me naive, but I did not think that my age would be an obstacle in the workplace. I had heard this from other women over the years, but I chose not to believe them because certainly it would never happen to me.

Here is a true story:

A sales recruiter was helping a sales manager fill an open position. The recruiter sent her a resume of a female candidate with a college graduation date of 1998. The sales manager abruptly turned down the resume. In addition, she let the recruiter know that she didn’t want to see any resumes with college graduation dates prior to 2003. This was the sales manager’s criterion for what she deemed to be a viable candidate. Not experience, not achievements, not abilities. Simply age.

This true story was painful for me to hear. Here was a woman selling out other women and contributing to the stigma that we fight every day and sadly her perspective is a harsh reality. However, let this statistic give you another reality check and perspective. In 2024, women over 65 will make up roughly the same percentage of the female workforce as older men do of the male workforce. Additionally, twice as many women over 55 will be in the labor force as women ages 16-24.

Knowing the stigma, knowing the numbers, and the reality, what is the best way to approach finding a new job later in life? Here are 5 tips when looking for a new job over the age of 40:

1. Use your Network
Sending our resumes to career websites will do nothing for us. We get pushed aside as we are categorized. The tip here is to use our network of colleagues, former business associates and friends to find companies who are hiring and will have a genuine interest in what we can do for their organizations. This method does work. Finding like -minded individuals with the same goals of working smart and getting stuff done will provide the best platform for finding a new working environment.
5 Tips When Looking For a New Job Over the Age of 40

2. Show off your skills
At this point in our careers, we have a proven list of accomplishments and skillsets. We have navigated some of our toughest times and have already been through the learning. Because of this we require less training and possess the right skills, because yeah, we know how to do it. We need to show off our confidence and accolades to a potential employer. They need to know that our leadership skills and experience will fit in flawlessly with their company.

3. Be bold
We can ask harder questions in the interview process and as an employee. Perhaps questions that challenge company methods or goals. If anything as women, unfortunately, we have been taught to be compliant and agreeable to get through the stepping -stones of our careers. We don’t have to do that anymore. We have arrived. Work experience has taught us to think quickly, make decisions and share opinions. We have a lot to teach, and hiring companies need to appreciate this.

4. Seek a mentor, be a mentor
In recent weeks I have had great women mentor me. Women of a certain age. Women who are drama free, make sh*t happen and don’t sweat the small stuff. I appreciate them, have learned from them and have committed to do the same for others. This is important as this will help us change the tide and break the stigma.

5. We are already tech savvy
Much to the disbelief of others, age doesn’t stifle our tech knowledge. It’s who we are as a society. Most of us already use work related apps like Zoom, Slack, Dropbox and others. The point is, our tech knowledge isn’t lacking, so that is no excuse for hiring companies or managers. We are already there. This is not a hinderance.

The battle continues. In my earlier years as a woman in the corporate world I fought to make a mark. Now, I’m fighting the same female battle in addition to 20+ years of life and work experience. This should get easier shouldn’t it? It doesn’t, so it is up to us to change it. We have to change the mindset by challenging the current stigma. Because we have arrived and we are not going anywhere.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas on DVD

How the Grinch Stole Christmas!: The Ultimate Edition featured specials:

How the Grinch Stole Christmas!:

Magnificently narrated by Boris Karloff (Frankenstein, The Mummy) and directed by animation genius and cartoon legend Chuck Jones (Looney Tunes, What's Opera, Doc?), How the Grinch Stole Christmas! tells the story of the miserable Grinch, who wants to sabotage Christmas for all the Whos in Who-ville.

The Grinch thinks that by stealing the Whos Christmas trees and presents, he’ll succeed in stealing their joy. However, when Christmas morning arrives, the Grinch is taken by surprise when he notices the Whos greet the day joyously singing Christmas carols regardless of the fact that their village has been completely stripped of holiday gifts, decorations and treats. The cheerful attitude of the Whos prompts the Grinch to ponder the true meaning of Christmas and he slowly comes to realize the spirit of the season is not generated by material possessions. Will the Grinch have a change of heart and consider returning the Whos’ Christmas gifts?

The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat:

The Grinch is up to his old tricks again in The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat, the Emmy® Award-winning special directed by legendary animator Friz Freleng. In this special, the Cat in the Hat encounters the Grinch while picnicking one day. He refers to the Grinch as Mr. Greenface, which the Grinch takes an as insult, prompting him to retaliate by building a series of outrageous devices designed to cause all sorts of disruption. First, he creates a “Vacusound Sweeper,” which distorts any and all of the sounds within a 50-mile radius of the Cat in the Hat. Then he creates the “Dark House,” which is the direct opposite of a light house and puts the Cat in the Hat into complete darkness. He then uses the “Flummox Deluxe” to further warp the Cat in the Hat’s surroundings, which sends him and everything around him into complete chaos. Will the Cat in the Hat figure out a way to stop the Grinch and outsmart all his crazy devices?

Halloween is Grinch Night:

When the Sour-Sweet wind starts to blow in Who-ville, all the Whos take cover because this signifies the beginning of Grinch Night, an evening in which the Grinch descends upon Who-ville to terrorize all its citizens. As the Grinch sets out on his journey to Who-ville, he encounters a courageous young Who named Euchariah, who attempts to stall the Grinch from reaching Who-ville. The Grinch however puts Euchariah into a trance in which he encounters all sorts of strange creatures who try to intimidate him. Will Euchariah manage to snap out of the trance in time to stop Grinch from reaching Who-ville?

“Since he was first created by Dr. Seuss over 60 years ago, the Grinch has become an iconic character heralding the arrival of the holiday season. He’s been loved by generations for his transformation by the true spirit of the holiday. This television special featuring the Grinch and the Whos of Whoville has become a seasonal classic and we’re delighted to offer this new release with two other classic Grinch specials,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, Vice President Family & Animation Marketing. She added, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!: The Ultimate Edition is the perfect addition to everyone’s holiday movie collection.”

5 Tips for Working Moms to Survive the Back-to-School Hustle

5 Tips for Working Moms to Survive the Back-to-School Hustle
From the moment my daughter got out of school in May to the end of July, was a complete blur. It was a blur of summer camp, work, travel, deadlines, proposals and pool parties. The fact that she was going back to school in three weeks had not occurred to me. When it did, I panicked. Where did the time go? I frantically realized I had no idea what day school started and had to ask another mom. I got a brisk answer of “August 20th,” which I like to call the “working mom fail” response. The guilt of not knowing when my child starts 2nd grade and feeling completely overwhelmed set in. Where do I begin? I’ve got to sign her up for fall activities, get a new backpack, lunchbox, some new clothes and also manage my job, meetings, travel and various work expectations. As working moms I think we feel there is no easy way to do all of this and keep a clear head and stay on task, but I have found five great tips for surviving back to school as a working mom:

1. Order Online:
Spare yourself the hustle of shopping. No need to throw everyone in the car in 100-degree heat to head to your favorite retail super store, fend off the kiddos requests for toys and candy while back-to-school shopping. It is not worth it. Modern technology allows us the ability to order online for backpacks, clothing and supplies. Think of the time and energy you will save by sitting on your couch and checking some boxes and swiping “check out”. This also applies to grocery shopping too, which is becoming more and more common. Download the app for Shipt or Amazon Prime and let them do the grocery shopping for you. Do it a day or two before school starts. The kids can make their requests so they get to put some creativity into their lunchbox choices. Other positives are that it isn’t expensive to shop online and it saves money because you avoid over-buying in a store.

2. Let the Laundry Lie:
Where does your laundry lie? Mine sits on a bed in the guest room.
Clean, yet unfolded. But clean. The point here is, let your laundry lie. It is okay to let some things slip during back -to -school time. You will have so much on your plate as it is, don’t let the mundane domestic stuff get to you. Not having every thing completed or accomplished around the house is okay. You will not get a ticket or a fine for letting some things in the household fall behind. Give yourself permission to know that it is okay if you don’t get everything done. It is completely normal, and you will eventually catch up.

3. Get Your Routine Back:
In the summer our routines are typically off. As I mentioned, it can feel like a complete blur when so much is going on. Activities, camp and work will run you, instead of you running them. No shock there. Bringing structure and school back into your life can be a struggle, but welcome it because it brings the return of normalcy. Give yourself a cushion returning to the routine by practicing earlier bedtimes and waking times week before school starts. This will get us parents and kids back on schedule. Also, create a family calendar with upcoming school activities and your work schedule to make sure that all planets are aligned, and if not, this gives you time to create a family management strategy.

4. Be Guilt Free:
I think the hardest thing about being a working mom during back -to -school is missing school events. The hallmarks of the beginning of the school year like Fall Festival or Meet the Teacher are big events for the kids. Missing them can make you feel disconnected from their little lives and the guilt can take over. This is also difficult because you miss the chance to meet other parents and classmates at these events. You start to feel like a constant outsider because you are the mom who isn’t around enough. Don’t beat yourself up or hold yourself to an impossible standard. Know that you are doing everything that you can to accommodate both school and work and that you are still present in your kids lives, even when you can’t physically be with them.

5. Connect with other working moms:
I have a lot of wonderful friends who are stay- at -home moms. They tend to keep me grounded and I rely on them a lot for my sanity. Working mom friends can be super supportive too because they are most likely experiencing the same emotions and situations. For overall complaining, coping and time management ideas your working mom friends will happily listen and help you. In addition, their schedules will most likely parallel yours, so for all of those 2:30 play dates you have missed, you can now do play dates on schedules that accommodate the work day. The silver lining here is that you get to solidify strong relationships with other women who will stand by you when you need support.

Managing back-to-school time will never be perfect or fool proof, but working outside of the home can bring on some added stress. It is balancing act that can cause disruption as you get adjusted to the new school year and schedules. Know that you are not alone, and we are all muddling through it together.

Experience Goes Hand-in-Hand With Education

Experience Goes Hand-in-Hand With Education
Pulling Out All The Stops For Your Child

As a parent, you want to make sure that you equip your child with the best possible chance of being successful in life. You've probably already enrolled them in a school that encourages them to become independent and pursues their strengths. After all, it is through their strengths that they can find a profession that they not only love, but are comfortable performing the work, and successful in doing so. As a result, they can be successful at their profession and quickly rise through the ranks. However, education alone is not enough to make your child stand out from the rest.

For many parents who want to help ensure that their child attends to the university or workforce of their dreams, enrolling them in a highly rated school isn't enough. In the case of university application reviewers, they're presented daily with children who all stem from excellent schools and have excellent grades. Often, there is nothing that makes them stand apart, and from that point, it's really a luck of a draw as to who is selected to join that university.

To make sure your child stands out from the rest, one of the best experiences you can give them is to sign them up for an international summer camp.

Real Culture

During these camps, children will be sent to certain places in the world where they can live with a family for a time. They'll learn their language, both in speaking and in writing, as well as have their eyes opened to local traditions. Not only will they be able to visit local historic sites, but they can come to understand a country at its base elements. This experience is sure to shape the child and for many employers and universities, children who have experienced diversity and possess language skills outside of standard English are passionately sought.

To make sure your child receives an incredible experience, sign them up now.

4 Important Resources for a Kid's Home Art Studio

4 Important Resources for a Kid's Home Art Studio
Nurturing a budding artistic talent is a wonderful way to keep children creative and imaginative. Art is also a form of self-expression, giving children an outlet for their day to day emotional woes. Parents who offer their children a stocked art studio may notice an increase in the creativity, overall disposition, and school performance of the children as they continue to use art as both a fun hobby and therapeutic activity.

Activity Tables and Easels

Activity tables are important for a variety of crafts and artistic creations. In most cases, children will sit down at an activity table in order to complete a project. This might include sculpting, paper crafts, or drawing. Be sure to provide protective cloths during messy projects, though. Easels are important for painting projects, especially those that may take a few weeks to complete.

Painting Supplies

Painting is a favored art activity by children. It is simply far more fun than drawing or coloring for most kids, especially since paint is able to blend and mix far more easily on the canvas. Fine art brushes, painting palettes, and an extensive paint collection are the core items that will be needed for a painting studio.
4 Important Resources for a Kid's Home Art Studio

Crafting Paper

For all of the scrap booking, card making, and holiday art projects, crafting paper is important to have on hand. This could be as simple and affordable as common construction paper; or, the children could have a variety of printed scrap booking and card crafting paper. With this paper, the children will need scissors, tape, glue, and rulers. Parents could also invest in glitter, hole punches in fun shapes, and scissors with unique cutting patterns.

Clay and Clay Tools

Clay is also a fun art medium, with Play-Doh being the most widely available version. However, true sculpting clay is far better for children who wish to produce skilled pieces of art that will be fired in a kiln. Clay tools help to shape and smooth the clay, as well as texture it. Art is an important hobby and activity for children. An art room at home will offer children a healthy, fun environment to spend extra time in.

3 Ways a Smile Can Shape a Child’s Outlook and Brighten the Future

The idiom “Don’t judge a book by its cover” means you shouldn’t form an opinion about someone based on appearance or personality. Yet the reality is, much of society – from school to the business world – does just that.

This tendency can be particularly rough on a young person’s psyche – and future development – when classmates tease them about their looks. One of the top reasons students give for being bullied is physical appearance, according to the National Center for Educational Statistics. Studies show victims of this type of ridicule are often withdrawn and lack self-confidence, which can affect them well into adulthood.

“Children can be cruel to each other about appearance, and being the target of mockery or bullying leaves a real mark on on a child’s psyche,” says Dr. Kerry White Brown, an orthodontist and author of A Lifetime of Sensational Smiles: Transforming Lives through Orthodontics. “The pressure only gets worse as they get older; they’re less likely to participate, and that holds them back from realizing their true potential, both in school and out.”

Conversely, making improvements can enhance the story of one’s life. For example, losing weight or making cosmetic changes like straightening teeth often alters how we’re perceived and feel about ourselves. A Penn State University study found that people who smile more tend to be seen as more likeable and more competent, and an article in The Washington Post cited statistics that attractive smiles lead to higher-paying jobs and greater satisfaction in life.
3 Ways a Smile Can Shape a Child’s Outlook and Brighten the Future

"When you look at the research, a child that has a confident and consistent smile makes them a healthier person overall,” White Brown says. “They’re seen in a more positive light, versus someone who never smiles, and this can carry into their future prospects.”

White Brown gives three ways a smile makes your child healthier, which can lead to a happier adult:

* Lowers stress and anxiety. Smiling releases endorphins, the chemicals in your body that make you feel happier. “Kids with crooked teeth hide their smile or never smile, and often they’re bottling up stress,” White Brown says. “They become introverts. Being confident to smile relaxes them and gives them a new lease on life.”

* Strengthens the immune system. “The physical effects can’t be understated, and are all the more reason parents should make sure they have happy children who aren’t overly self-conscious or down about their appearance,” White Brown says. “It’s been proven that smiling helps your body produce white blood cells to help fight illnesses.” Hungarian health research teams studying smiles published evidence that sick children who were made to smile significantly increased their white blood cell count.

* Makes you more self-confident. “It starts with the fact that when you smile, others are more likely to smile back at you,” White Brown says. “It makes you more approachable, more likely to engage with others and grow in the process. That’s one reason some business people think a winning smile is as important to leadership as management technique.”

“How you feel about yourself isn’t just important when you’re a child,” White Brown says. “How you saw yourself then and how you see yourself as an adult can be linked, and it can impact your choices and options throughout your life.”

Dr. Kerry White Brown is a 5-star rated orthodontist and the author of A Lifetime of Sensational Smiles: Transforming Lives through Orthodontics. A graduate of the Howard University College of Dentistry, she operates an orthodontics practice, White Brown Smiles, in South Carolina with five locations. Dr. White Brown is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontists, and the South Carolina Association of Orthodontists

Lemon-Garlic Pasta with Grilled Chicken & Veggies Recipe

It has been extremely hot around here and I've been trying to prepare my family's meals by using our outdoor grill. There is no way that I'm heating up my kitchen by using the oven on 90+ degree hot & humid days. For the past 3 weeks, I've been utilizing my crockpot and our backyard grill. Today's guest post recipe is courtesy of Pasta Fits. You can find oodles of free recipes on their website.
Lemon-Garlic Pasta with Grilled Chicken & Veggies Recipe
Lemon-Garlic Pasta with Grilled Chicken & Veggies Recipe

4 oz. ziti
1 Tbsp. vegetable oil for brushing
1 (6 oz.) boneless, skinless chicken breast
8 oz. romaine hearts, halved lengthwise
8 oz. ½ bunch asparagus, trimmed of tough stems
½ tsp. lemon zest
2 Tbsp. lemon juice
2 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
1 tsp. grated garlic

Bring a large pot of salted water to the boil. Cook the ziti according to package directions. Drain and reserve.

Heat an outdoor grill or grill pan over high heat. Season the chicken with salt and pepper and a little of the oil. Place the chicken on the grill and cook for 3 – 4 minutes per side or until cooked through. Reserve. Brush the romaine and the asparagus with the remaining oil and season with salt and pepper. Place the romaine and asparagus on the grill. The romaine will start to char on the outside, turn to allow all sides to get a little char, about 3 minutes total. Remove from the grill and reserve. The asparagus will turn bright green and have grill marks when it’s ready, also about 3 minutes. Remove from grill and reserve. When the chicken, romaine and asparagus are cool enough to handle, chop the chicken into bite-sized chunks, roughly chop the romaine, and slice the asparagus into 2” pieces. Reserve.

In a large bowl, whisk together the lemon zest, lemon juice, olive oil and garlic. Place the chicken, romaine, asparagus and ziti in a bowl and toss to combine. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

How Gum Disease is at the Root of 5 Serious Health Issues

Your dentist keeps warning you about bleeding or inflamed gums for a reason. They can be a gateway to serious health issues.

Periodontal disease, the result of infections and inflammations of the gums, affects nearly 50 percent of U.S. adults aged 30 and older, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The problem increases with age; 70 percent of U.S. adults 65 and over have some form of periodontal disease. Those sizable portions of the population are at increased risk heart disease, stroke, cancer, erectile dysfunction, and prostate problems.

“Lousy gums can lead to more health concerns than many people may realize,” says Dr. Harold Katz, a dentist, bacteriologist and developer of TheraBreath Healthy Gums Oral Rinse (www.therabreath.com). “The bacteria in our mouths can spread throughout the body, and the results can be devastating.

“When you brush, floss and rinse regularly, you are doing more than caring for your teeth and gums. You are also taking care of your overall health.”
How Gum Disease is at the Root of 5 Serious Health Issues

Katz says major health concerns researchers have associated with gum disease include:

Heart disease. Several studies have shown a link between periodontitis and heart disease. “The same bacteria causing periodontitis symptoms like inflammation, bleeding, and bone loss around teeth can travel through the bloodstream to the arteries,” Katz says. “Bacteria can latch onto the walls of the arteries and cause small blood clots, increasing the risk of restricted blood flow to the heart.”

Stroke. The findings from a study titled "Impacts Of Periodontitis On Nonfatal Ischemic Stroke" showed that patients who suffered a stroke also had evidence of an oral infection. “Research has indicated that gum disease is nearly equal to high blood pressure as a source of causing strokes,” Katz says.

Cancer. “Bacteria swells the gums, and it can cause similar reactions to other tissues,” Katz says. A study published in Cancer Research found that some of the same types of bacteria that trigger periodontal disease may also be linked to a higher risk of esophageal cancer. Another investigation, in the Annals of Oncology, found that men with an advanced form of periodontitis were 45 percent more likely to get diagnosed with cancer. “More proof you are simply endangering yourself while leaving bad gums unattended, allowing bacteria to spread,” Katz says.

Erectile dysfunction. Research has suggested there’s a connection between systemic inflammation – the kind that could be caused by that traveling bacteria in your mouth – and increased risk of developing impotence. In research from Taiwan, men with erectile dysfunction were 79 percent more likely to have been diagnosed with chronic periodontal disease.

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA). When the prostate becomes inflamed or infected, PSA levels increase, notes the American Academy of Periodontology. “The AAP states that men with indicators of periodontal disease tend to have higher levels of PSA, as well as more inflammation of the prostate,” Katz says. That can lead to a condition known as prostatitis, which can be manifest in painful irritation, difficult ejaculation, and urination urgency.

“It’s simple: Maintaining healthy gums increases your chances of a healthy body,” Katz says. “Poor oral hygiene causes infection of the gums. It can send toxins into the bloodstream. It’s being proven that having good oral hygiene is one of the most important preventative health measures one can take.”

Dr. Harold Katz (www.therabreath.com), developer of TheraBreath Healthy Gums Oral Rinse, received his degree in bacteriology from UCLA and is the founder of The California Breath Clinics and author of The Bad Breath Bible. He has been featured on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” CBS’s “Early Show” and “The View” with Barbara Walters and countless other TV shows. Dr. Katz has developed oxygenating compounds that have been used by millions around the world to eliminate bad breath. He is also the bearer of the now famous “Halimeter,” which tests the sulfur compounds in the mouth that cause bad breath. Dr. Katz’ website offers a free online bad breath test – as well as a sneaky way to tell someone they have halitosis.

Disney's A Wrinkle In Time Movie DVD

More than 50 years after Madeleine L’Engle’s young adult novel “A Wrinkle in Time” was awarded the prestigious Newbery Medal, the big-screen retelling of this timeless classic takes audiences on a transformative journey, exquisitely illustrated through jaw-dropping visual effects, a stirring musical score and diverse, star-studded cast. Three celestial guides, Mrs. Which (two-time Academy Award® nominee Oprah Winfrey), Mrs. Whatsit (Oscar®, Golden Globe® and Emmy® winner Reese Witherspoon) and Mrs. Who (Emmy nominee Mindy Kaling), come to Earth to share their wisdom and love with struggling eighth-grader Meg Murry (Storm Reid) as she journeys across dimensions with classmate Calvin (Levi Miller) and younger brother Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe) in search of her father (Chris Pine), a world-renowned physicist who mysteriously disappeared four years ago.

As fantastical as the film’s premise and imagery may seem, “A Wrinkle in Time” centers on a universal human need that feels particularly relevant and relatable today. “This is a story about belonging,” says DuVernay. “It’s about a girl who just doesn’t feel strong in her mind, body and spirit. But through this epic journey, she finds her strength and learns that the center of the universe starts inside her. It’s about Meg feeling like she belongs in the universe and has a mighty part to play… as do we all.”

Everything I Learned About Leadership I Learned From My Mother

My Mum is quite petite, gentle, and very Scottish. No drill sergeant or business card that read Household CEO, she was way more than just a mother. She was my first leader. I realize from my earliest days until today, almost every leadership lesson I needed to learn she taught me.

SERVANT LEADERSHIP

Books have been written about Servant Leadership and big ticket speeches given but from my earliest memories I saw my Mother live the very tenants of Servant Leadership. Mum built a home of warmth and love where I felt secure enough to risk striking out on my own but knew that I had a soft place to which I could always return. I knew that no matter what, I could always depend on her. She modeled what it meant to be a great mother, wife, daughter, and sister.

Teams need to feel connected and team members empowered to take risk but know that you have their back if it doesn’t always go according to plan. Team members also need to know what behaviors are acceptable and what good looks like.

HUMILITY

Maybe this was one of the tougher lessons for me to learn. My parents were visiting our home in Kansas when a massive storm blew through. I arrived home to find our back yard flooded and totally upended. My Dad, Husband and Mother were beavering away trying to fix the damage. I’m not sure exactly what I did when I showed up but my Mum threw her hands in the air and yelled, “Stop. Good news. Management’s here!”

Being the boss doesn’t mean you have to have all the answers or always be the one in control A little gratitude and acknowledgement of the hard work of others can go a long way. Letting others take the lead at times build their confidence and sets an important example of humble leadership.

ACCOUNTABILITY

I was a really good kid and rarely got into trouble but I knew if I broke the rules or disappointed in some way, it was going to be dealt with. The rules and expectations were clear. In my senior year, my classmates and I were going out for a farewell dinner. My Mum told me she didn’t want me drinking at the event. I went. I didn’t drink and I was not a happy camper. Looking back on it now, it was good advice. Yet if I had had a drink my Mum wouldn’t have known.

Accountability cuts two ways. The first way is that when there are rules and expectations, there have to be consequences if there is a miss. But the second most important element to accountability is that people choose to step up and do the right thing and hold themselves accountable even if it might be easier to let things slide.

COMMITMENT

My Mum married the man who was to be my Dad over 63 years ago. I’ve observed the ebb and flow of their marriage. There was more smooth than rough, but as in any marriage, there were some challenges. I never for a moment saw my Mum flinch from that commitment she had made for better or worse. I love watching them together now, as she still laughs at all his old jokes even when she hears them from the umpteenth time.

Team members value the stability of knowing where you stand and that when the going gets tough they can count on you to have their backs, stick with it and work it through. This doesn’t mean that the tough conversations don’t happen. They do. I’m not naïve enough to think all relationships whether business or personal work out but I know I have to work hard and commit to the best possible outcome.

ALWAYS BE OPEN TO LEARNING

When Facebook came into its own, my Mum took it on! She realized that through Facebook, even though she was some 5,000 miles away, she could casually stay connected with what the boys and I were up to. She had never owned a computer and had nothing fancier than a flip phone. In her mid-70’s she got her first p.c. and some 5 years later a smart phone. Unafraid to ask for help and lean into the technology, she fast became my number one Facebook “stalker.”

Leaders who have nothing to learn show up totally closed off. When you stop learning you stop growing. No matter how far along you may be in your career, you need to stay open to learning new skills, new ways of doing things, and new technologies. It can open up a whole new world for you.

CELEBRATE

Mum’s always been good at celebrating, but I saw it reach epic proportions when she became a grandmother. Watching her with my boys, I saw her celebrate every little victory and accomplishment even if it wasn’t quite perfect. They knew they had no bigger cheerleader than their Nanny. Her celebrating gave them confidence to always strive even against the biggest challenges. Having her cheer and making her proud was a driver in itself.

We often get so caught up in what lies ahead that we forget to celebrate accomplishments. Demonstrating pride in what others achieve provides recognition and incentive to continue to do well.

So to my Mum and all the mothers out there, Happy Mother’s Day. Perhaps without even knowing it, you teach leadership better than anyone else in the world!

5 Non-Surgical Steps For Treating Your Arthritis

Arthritis afflicts 54 million U.S. adults, according to the Arthritis Foundation.

It is the leading cause of disability among U.S. adults over 55, and in many cases leads to total-joint replacements. That is a big decision – sometimes necessary, sometimes premature, says Dr. Victor Romano (www.drvictorromano.com), an orthopedist and author of Finding The Source: Maximizing Your Results – With and Without Orthopaedic Surgery.

“Total-joint replacements are wonderful and can be life-changing, but they also can wear down and become infected,” Romano says. “The best approach for arthritis of the knee, for example, is to wait as long as possible before replacing the knee. There are several steps you can take to deal with arthritis before a surgical option. These measures, some of which you can perform without the aid of a medical professional, often can significantly lessen the pain and improve the quality of life.”
5 Non-Surgical Steps For Treating Your Arthritis

Romano recommends five steps you can take to handle arthritis before opting for surgery:

• Wear good shoes with arch supports. With weight bearing and time, the arches in feet tend to fail. “Good shoes with arch supports improve the alignment of the feet and ultimately improve the alignment of the knees,” Romano says. “The feet and ankles act as shock absorbers for the knees.”

• Have a daily exercise and balance program. Studies show that arthritic patients who exercise do much better than those who don’t. Romano recommends at least a 20-minute daily exercise program for all patients with arthritis. “Exercise should include stretching, aerobic activity, and strength training,” he says.

• Use a hinged knee brace, as needed, for support. Wear the smallest brace that makes you the most comfortable. “Do not wear the brace for everyday activities,” Romano says, “but for extra activities such as golfing, shopping or exercise. It unloads the arthritic area and allows you to pursue more pain-free activities, which you may not have been able to do otherwise.”

• Eat nutritious foods; keep your weight under control. Weight loss reduces the stress on your knees and increases mobility. “Why not try an anti-inflammatory diet?” Romano says. “Sugar and processed foods cause inflammation of the arteries as well as inflammation of the joints.”

• Improve your bone health. Improving your bone health with increased calcium intake, daily vitamin D, and weight-bearing exercises can lessen the pain of arthritis. “Should you eventually need a total joint replacement, building up your bone density will improve your chances of having a long-lasting replacement,” Romano says.

“Arthritis is not something that can be removed with surgery or scraped out with a scope,” Romano says. “You must listen to your joints. When you’ve tried all of these non-surgical measures and they don’t seem to work any longer, then surgery may be your best option. If surgery is necessary, rapid and successful recovery is possible by having optimized your physical and nutritional health beforehand.”
