6 Ways Reading Brings Joy To Our Lives

Image: FreeImages.com
The options for latching onto a great book – whether a classic by Victor Hugo or the latest bestseller by John Grisham – appear limitless these days.

Printed books remain popular, but e-readers provide additional choices. We can still visit bookstores and libraries, but a seemingly infinite selection of titles is available for ordering online.

And, despite periodic worries about the reading habits of the young, a Pew Research Center study released last year showed that young adults, ages 18-29, were the group most likely to have read a book in the previous 12 months.

It’s not surprising people are still eager to lose themselves in a richly plotted novel, a well-researched biography or any title on a favorite topic, says Darlene Quinn, an author whose latest novel, “Conflicting Webs” (www.darlenequinn.net) is the fifth in her standalone Webs Series, which features stories steeped in family issues in today's rapidly paced world.

“Reading is beneficial for everyone, whether we do it for entertainment, to pass the time or to learn,” Quinn says. “We can grow and change from the first page to the last page, and anywhere in between. A love for reading can open a lot of doors.”

Quinn, a lifelong lover of books, suggests six ways reading brings joy to our lives:

• Relaxation factor. After a busy day, down time with a book can be a rewarding way to segue into bedtime. “Putting up your feet with a cup of tea and a timeless story can make the stress melt away,” Quinn says. “What better way to unwind?” The beauty of ending the day with a good book is that you can still have mental stimulation even as you seek a distraction from personal issues, work concerns and the unexpected complications of life.

• Universal appeal, personal experience. People can read the same book, yet come away with an experience that is distinct for them, Quinn says. That puts her in agreement with Edmund Wilson, the American literary and social critic, who observed that “no two persons ever read the same book.” Quinn says we often alter what is written – or at least our interpretations of it – to reflect our situations, personalities and opinions.

• Tech savvy welcome, but not required. E-readers are popular these days and it’s not hard to understand why, Quinn says. They bring numerous benefits to the reading experience, such as the ability to instantly download new books or change the type size on the screen. But tried-and-true print versions of books remain strong and it’s nice to be able to grab a book without charging its battery or bringing along a power cord, Quinn says. “And as far as I’m concerned, you just can’t beat the intoxicating aroma of fresh book pages,” she says.

• To infinity and beyond. Trains, planes and automobiles all have limits on where they can take us. Books don’t. A science fiction novel can whisk us away to an alternate universe. A historical novel can plunk us down in the middle of the Salem witch trials. In the movie “Toy Story,” Buzz Lightyear’s catchphrase was “to infinity and beyond.” That aptly describes the reach of books and the power they have to transport us. “Right in our hands we have the passageway to a new world, a new language or a new understanding,” Quinn says. “We can be anywhere and we can be there at any time.”

• Lessons within the pages. The opportunity to expand our creativity and knowledge is what reading is all about, Quinn says. Name a topic and a book exists that can help you learn more about it. The options are numerous – music, history, art, geography, exploration, science, nature, religion and more. “My goal has always been to be a lifelong learner and books are a fantastic asset for achieving that,” Quinn says.

John Green, author of such works as “The Fault in Our Stars” and “Paper Towns,” has said, “Great books help you understand, and they help you feel understood.” Quinn says that might be the best reason of all to read.

“The feeling that someone else knows our struggles and relates to our lives can give us a sense of completeness, and help us realize we aren’t the only ones who feel or think the way we do,” she says.

“Reading can make us happy when we are sad. It can make us laugh when we are depressed. And it can excite us when we are disheartened. Those are great accomplishments for such a simple activity.”

About Darlene Quinn - Darlene Quinn is an author and journalist from Long Beach, Calif., whose novels about deceit, intrigue and glamour in the retail fashion industry were inspired by her years working in management with Bullocks Wilshire Specialty department stores. Quinn’s novels are steeped in family issues in today’s rapidly paced world. Her latest is “Conflicting Webs,” the fifth book in her epic Web series. Previous titles in the standalone series have been “Webs of Fate,” “Webs of Power,” “Twisted Webs” and “Unpredictable Webs.”

Flatbread Finger Sandwiches Recipe

Who hasn’t gotten in trouble at some point for “playing with their food?” Now Kontos Foods makes it OK for kids, and adults, to make their own individual sandwiches in fun shapes and sizes, with a variety of ingredients that will have everyone asking for more.

Kid lunchUsing two pieces of circle-shaped flatbread, you can help your kids create their all-time favorites of ham, turkey, bologna, cheese, PB&J or hummus sandwiches. Just cut Kontos Flatbread into fun shapes – such as triangle wedges, small circles, squares, hearts, star shapes, etc. – and you’ve found a creative, fun alternative to boring, everyday, squishy white bread.

Fun-shaped flatbread sandwiches are not only delicious, but they also travel well when wrapped securely in plastic wrap or foil. Kontos Foods, a New Jersey provider of Mediterranean flatbreads and other foods, suggests this easy-to-prepare recipe:

Flatbread Finger Sandwiches Recipe

2 pieces of Kontos Foods Pocket-Less Pita®, white or whole wheat
2 slices of your favorite lunchmeat – ham, turkey, bologna or roast beef
2 slices of your favorite cheese – Swiss, American or Muenster
Lettuce and tomato, if desired
1 tbsp mayonnaise or mustard

Spread one piece of flatbread with your favorite condiment, such as mayonnaise or mustard.
Place meat and cheese slices on the bread, plus lettuce and tomato if desired.
Top with your second piece of Flatbread.
Cut sandwiches into as many shapes and sizes as you like. Metal cookie cutters are ideal for this.
Wrap, two at a time, tightly in plastic wrap or foil, and enjoy!

For families watching their carbohydrates, this recipe also works well with Kontos Greek Lifestyle Flatbread, a pocket-less flatbread with more protein, fewer carbohydrates, sugar and calories than other flatbreads. And, for those non-sandwich eaters, try cutting your Flatbread into strips, pop into a small plastic zip bag, and enclose a personal-sized container of hummus for a seriously healthy treat.

“This lunchbox-ready meal is a tasty, kid-friendly alternative to the monotony of sliced sandwich bread. Kids will love the fluffy, delicious texture of Pocket-Less Pita, and the many shapes make easy-to-hold finger sandwiches that are fun to eat,” said Steve Kontos, vice president and owner of Kontos Foods.

Kontos Pocket-Less Pita® and Greek Lifestyle Flatbread come in handy retail packaging. Kontos sells its products to retailers and foodservice establishments across North America and around the world. Find Kontos Foods on Twitter @KontosFoods, on Facebook and on Pinterest.

Top Herbal Remedies for Hyperactive Children

* Red Clover Blossom -- an excellent choice in any tea blend, as it is considered a "blood purifier" as well as a gentle nerve relaxant. Would facilitate in cleansing the blood of toxins/chemicals, while calming and is recommended used over a long period of time. Use as a tea--1 tsp/cup of water; steep 20 minutes, drink 1/2 cup morning and evening.

* Chamomile -- safe, effective, gentle and good-tasting relaxant for children.

* Lime Blossom -- stronger but still a safe, relaxing herb.

* Valerian -- a central nervous system relaxant; excellent as a tea or fresh plant liquid or powdered extract, one of the strongest natural herbal sedatives, but non-narcotic and not habit-forming.

* Catnip -- another mild sleep aid and relaxing herb, safe for children.

* California Poppy -- a safe sedative for children; recommended for hyperactivity and sleeplessness.

* Wild Lettuce -- safe and mild sleep aid and sedative; usually mixed with other herbs.

College-Bound: How to Save on Dorm Room Furnishings

While overall spending on back-to-school is slightly down this year compared to last year, one category is poised to see a big uptick: dorm decor and furnishings. According to the National Retail Federation, college-bound students and their families will dish out over $126 on goods for their rooms, a nearly 25-percent increase over spending reports from 2014.

Since dorms and off-college abodes can be expensive to furnish, buying desks, futon frames and chairs from flea markets and Craigslist is a good idea. However, it's important to know what your other options are when community inventory runs thin. Plus, everybody has a style and you likely want to impart some of your flare on your furnishings!

Read on for seven ways to get college-ready for less.

Scout delivery options close to campus.
To compete with online retailers, brick-and-mortar stores are increasingly offering "ship-to-store" options to customers. This strategy is great for college kids on the move, as relocating hefty pieces of furniture across the state or country can be a cumbersome and expensive endeavor. Shop stores like Kohl's and Best Buy and get your products delivered to the store located closest to campus. JCPenney takes is a step further, offering free shipping to anywhere in the country - including dorm rooms! - on orders of $99 or more.

Find furniture at discount retailers.
Ross, TJMaxx and HomeGoods all have selections of furnishings great for dorm rooms and apartments, not to mention cheap decor items. Look for end tables, desk chairs, dressers and even recliners and dining room chairs. Increase your savings by purchasing a discounted gift card to these retailers through Gift Card Granny, a discount gift card comparison site. Currently, you can save up to 20% off cards to TJMaxx.

Network for savings.
Remember when your parents brought your Girl Scout or Boy Scout fundraiser to their workplaces and you made bank? Well, they can take a similar approach now that you're heading off to college. Ask your parents if they'd be willing to send an email to their networks - business, social, etc. - asking if anyone has furnishings they're planning to get rid of. This will capture anyone who planned to sell or give away furnishings but hadn't posted it to Craigslist or Facebook yet, giving you first dibs!

Take advantage of gift cards.
Back-to-school is a huge event for "free gift card with purchase" offers, and while you may be tempted to go on a shopping spree with these freebies, it's best to apply them strategically. Instead of buying all your dorm room furnishings, decor items and other needed supplies in one haul, calculate which items you should purchase to score a free gift card, then purchase the rest in a separate transaction and use the gift card to offset your total expense. For example, Target is currently offering a free $20 gift card when you spend $100 on college items. Additionally, you can find Target coupon codes through sites like CouponSherpa.com, and save an additional $25 off your $100 purchase through Aug. 1.

Consider craft stores.
For unique storage solutions, kitschy decor and even night stands, check out such craft chain stores as Hobby Lobby and JoAnn Fabric. While these stores specialize in fabric and craft-making, they also have tons of decor items and select furnishings that often cost much less than furniture stores. Plus, you can typically find a coupon for 40 to 50% off one item from each store and redeem it through your smartphone using a coupon app.

Shop online for savings.
Online stores like Wayfair and Overstock offer tons of furnishings and decor items available for free or low-cost shipping. These cute side tables on Overstock, for example, are currently 50-percent off and ship for just $2.95. Wayfair is advertising up to 70% off dorm-room essentials including a Mesh Task Chair for $48.99 (originally $199.99) and a chic six-piece comforter set for $43.99 (originally $92.99). It's always a good idea to compare prices, so install the PriceBlink or Invisible Hand browser add-ons to get notified if something you're looking at is better priced elsewhere. Just don't forget to factor in shipping costs!

Bring the outdoors in.
Summer is eclipsed by back-to-school season, making all things warm-weather and carefree on clearance. That includes patio furniture and accessories, and some of these items look and function just as nicely indoors. Think wicker chairs, mosaic accent tables and area rugs. For example, Wayfair currently has a stylish 5-foot square grey and beige outdoor area rug available for $64.99, down from the original price of $125.51.

Tips for Growing a Tillandsia Air Plant

For the past few months I've been growing and taking care of several Tillandsia Air Plants. One of the things I love about them is that they are easy-to-grow, require very little care and they take up very little space! They are great little plants for those who live in apartments, RV's, travel trailers or put one on your desk at the office.

The official name for these plants is Tillandsia but many people refer to them as Air Plants because they need very little water to survive and need partial sunlight. In my planters...I have them hovering above some natural beach sand as I like that look the best.

Tips for Growing a Tillandsia Air Plant

* They need very little water! When watering...remove them from your container and turn them upside down. Place some bottled spring water into a misting bottle and lightly mist the plant. Once misted, lay it upside down on a paper towel to air dry. Once dry...place it back into your container. You NEVER want to use tap water (chemicals) or distilled water. They thrive best with spring water. When it comes to the frequency of watering...you only want to "mist" them a tiny little bit every week. Do NOT over-water!

* The Tillandsia Air Plant needs partial sun for 2-3 hours every day. This sunlight can be morning or evening sun. It's best to avoid hot afternoon direct sun which can kill them. Walk around your home and look for a window that gets partial sunlight for a couple of hours per day. That would make the best spot for your air plant.

* The optimum temperature range for this type of plant is 50 to 90 degrees F. If you live in a colder climate you may want to relocate your air plant to a different room in the home if that particular window gets cold drafts. Do not try growing this plant in a hot attic, hot sun room or damp, wet basement area.

* I like to grow mine in clear glass containers (like a fish bowl) and place small natural objects inside. The one I am showing in the photo above is in a glass fish bowl with natural beach sand, a tiny starfish, 2 small sea shells and a small piece of natural coral. You can add any natural objects that you would like! Avoid using "craft" sand that you find at your local craft supply stores!

Growing the Tillandsia Air Plant is a really easy thing to do! They are hearty little plants that do well in most areas of your home. They require very little care and take up very little space! You can get creative with your plant containers and the items you put inside with them. A great houseplant for those with a "brown thumb" to try!

Celebrity Fitness Trainer Explains How To Snack Like A Supermodel

Old wisdom tells us that snacking between meals is a good way to get plump. But new wisdom tells us that snacking is a good way to keep your metabolism in gear and to prevent you from overdoing it at meal time. Who’s right?

“The truth is somewhere in the middle,” says Joey Thurman, celebrity fitness trainer, model, and nutrition expert. “Yes, snacking can be a great way to rev up your metabolism and keep you energized and satisfied. But if you are not snacking on the right things, then your mid-day noshes could be destroying your diet.”

Here are Thurman’s best snack foods for a lean, mean body and tons of energy (His favorite homemade snack recipe is at the end):
1) Hard boiled eggs: “Always keep hard boiled eggs at hand,” says the nutrition guru. “Make half a dozen at the beginning of the week and then store them in the office fridge.”

2) Roasted chickpeas. “Roasted chickpeas are a crunchy and satisfying treat, especially if you are craving something salty,” says Thurman. “You can buy them pre-made or make a batch easily at home. Add spices like cumin and chili powder to up the flavor without adding calories.”

3) Protein shake. “Nothing kills an ice-cream craving like a cold, frothy protein shake,” he says, “And it is wonderful for muscle recovery after a hard workout.”

4) Homemade granola bars. “Make your own granola bars using sugar substitutes like agave nectar,” says Thurman, “Use your favorite fruits and nuts and get creative.”

5) Snack clean with Thurman’s dried fruit concoction. “Here’s my favorite snack right now: I take a sliced dried apple and I top it with almond butter. Then I toss some coconut shavings and cinnamon on top. It’s out of this world…and best of all, it’s great for your body!”
